Baby shower recap and some good eats

31 Oct

So this past week has been a pretty good relaxation from school. We had a nice Fall break filled with:

  • Sleeping in
  • Work
  • Shopping
  • Homework
  • Workouts

Last night all of us siblings carved our pumpkins, watched scary movies, and made pizza! Court and I decided to share a pumpkin this year, and made a cute Tinker Bell One. 🙂 Speaking of Halloween, here are Tips on a healthier holiday without sacrificing fun and flavor from nutrition expert and healthy lifestyle consultant, Melissa Hooper:

Halloween can be a scary time nutritionally, so Voskos Greek Yogurt offers ways to make this and every holiday a bit healthier without sacrificing fun and flavor for the entire family.

There are ways to reduce calories, sugar and fat while avoiding all the frightful shrills and squeals!  For parties as well as passing out treats, caramel apples make a healthier treat since caramel is low-fat.  Plus, it’s a great way to sneak in a fruit.  Rice crispy marshmallow treats also make a healthier alternative by using low-fat marshmallow and cereal, with the latter offering B-vitamins.  Additionally, the marshmallow treats can be molded into fun shapes and characters such as ghosts and pumpkins.  Children love getting hands-on and moms can help them make these types of easy and creative treats.

In addition to making nutritious tweaks to some of the traditional ways Halloween is celebrated (with candies and high-sugary foods), it’s important to remember that good nutrition is dependent on good dental care.  So, while we may allow our kids to have a few more sugary treats than normal during this time, we have to also instill good dental habits such as brushing teeth after eating sugary foods.  In fact, why not hand out travel-size toothbrushes and toothpaste on Halloween?  Voskos Greek Yogurt recommends handing out some other fun treats along with the toothbrush and toothpaste, or you may find yourself the target of a trick!  A few more hand-out ideas on non-edible items are match-box cars, pencils, mini-note pads, stickers, bubbles and small party favors.

According to Melissa Hooper, registered dietician of Bite-Size Nutrition, “Good nutrition begins with good dental care.  Especially for children while they are still growing and developing, it is essential they get enough calcium to support strong healthy teeth during these formative years.”  One of the best ways to get calcium is by eating Voskos Greek Yogurt.  Voskos Greek Yogurt is a good source of calcium, has two times the protein, higher in probiotics and less lactose, all in addition to the delicious taste kids love.  An 8 ounce serving of Voskos Plain Original Greek Yogurt has 30% calcium.  Top this off with fresh fruit and nuts to start children off on a healthy track.  “Some fun ideas for serving Greek yogurt are to make smoothies or as frosting on top of cupcakes and cookies.  Kids, goblins and witches of all ages will eat it up!,” adds Hooper.

 Now to the Baby Shower…

Here are the cute Chocolate Covered Oreo’s Court and I spent one whole day making. Trust us, they are not easy to make! Especially if you are doing all the details.

 And chocolate pretzel rods 🙂

Our mom went crazy and ordered the Personalised M&M’s that said “It’s a boy,” and “Tyler.”

 Here We are 😉

These are our twin cousins Lexi and Logan!

Our brother Travis, Erica, and their friend Eric

The Grandpa’s, that is Grandpa from work aka Jay, (he’s a customer and a good friend to the family…lol), and our real Grandpa on the right.

The little girl that loved me, and sat by my side the whole baby shower

 Ashley and her “Friend” Carlo

 Travis and Erica opening gifts

And then he got cake smashed in his face by the boys!

It was a nice break, and now there are another 3 weeks till Thanksgiving break, which means our birthday and Christmas are fastly approaching, Yikes! Is anyone else starting to worry about gift shopping?

Since this week has allowed some time for shopping, Court and I spent a pretty penny at Ulta. And we have a product to rave about. TRESemme’s new Fresh Start Line. This whole line is awesome! We love how soft and frizz-free it makes our hair look. If you have never tried dry shampoo, you must 🙂 Your hair will thank you for the hydration without using all that water which gets rid of all the natural oils.

Have a Happy Safe Halloween!

XOXO-Court & Whit

The answer to our recipe call!

18 Oct

 Hey buddies!

We’ve missed you all 🙂 The past 2 weeks have been filled with:

  • Midterms(yuck!)
  • Writing lots of essay’s(double yuck)
  • School/work
  • Cleaning, cleaning…. and more CLEANING
  • Making 70+ cookie and pretzel candy melts(they are a lot harder than they look to make lol.)
  • And of course good food 😉

So you are probably wondering why on earth are we making so many candy melts and cleaning like it is nobodies business? Well it is because the BABY SHOWER is this Saturday! I cannot believe it has finally arrived to this week. I remember starting to plan this whole party clear back in April. I had been dreading and anticipating this week. The dreadful part is having to get your house ready for 70 people, but the anticipated part of the whole thing is seeing all of my family from Utah! We almost never see each other unless it is Summer so it is going to be fun.

This morning Whit and I cooked up an old friend… Quaker Instant Hot Cereal!

  • 1 pkt. Instant Apple Cranberry Almond Hot Cereal
  • 1/3 cup almond milk
  • 3-4 drops vanilla stevia
  • 1/2 nuked gala apple
  • cinnamon

  • Fiber One Oats & Apple Struesel Bar crumbled
  • Dollop Sprout’s Old Fashioned AB

And to drink was a C+W Special Pumpkin Spice Latte

In the mix:

  • 1/4 cup almond milk
  • 1/4 cup boiling hot water
  • 3/4 cup brewed coffee
  • 2 tbsp pumpkin puree
  • 1 scoop vanilla cappuccino mix
  • 5 drops maple extract
  • 1/2 tsp Sugar-free Vanilla Torani
  • 1/2 tsp sugar-free Pumpkin Torani
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice + Cinnamon

~Whip to top!

Lunch was a sammie with turkey, hummus, onions, american cheese, and spike. This was served alongside the new obsession: Harvest Fruit Salad.

Mixed greens, strawberries, butternut squash, dried cranberries, walnuts, cottage cheese, stawberry-balsalmic dressing.

In case you were wondering what Spike is. It is a seasoning that Whit and I add to salads, sandwiches, eggs, wraps, pasta, veggies, etc.

Ingredients: Defattted nutrisoy granules, granular toasted onion, nutritional yeast, granular garlic, celery root granules, ground dill, horseradish granules, mustard powder, lemon peels, orange powder, parsley flakes, red bell peppers, green bell peppers, white cate pepper, rose hips powder, summer savory, mushroom powder, safflower, parsley powder, white onion powder, spinach powder, tomato powder, sweet hungarian paprika, ground celery seed, cayenne pepper, ground tumeric, ground cumin, ground ginger, ground corriander, ground fenugreek, ground cloves, cinnamon powder, plus a delightful herbal bouquet of the best greek oregano, french tarragon, french sweet basil, french marjoram, french rosemary and spanish thyme.

Todays workout consisted of 20 min. treadmill and 20 min. No More Trouble Zone video.

5-7 min.    7.0 mph    0 incline
7-8 min.    8.0 mph    0 incline
8-10 min.  5.0 mph    4 incline
10-20 min. REPEAT

Dinner was a Whole Wheat or Bust Fall creation: Harvest Pumpkin Sauce served over spaghetti squash.

(This was the recipe we chose to make for our Fall Recipe Call)

Here is the recipe from the lovely lady herself:

Flawless Fall Pumpkin Pasta Sauce

Recipe: Makes 2 servings

~10 pecans, chopped

1/3 cup chopped sweet onion

1/2 tbsp real butter

3/4 cup pumpkin

pinch pumpkin pie spice

pinch chili pepper

1/4 cup half and half

1/4 cup milk

1/4 to 1/2 tsp salt (I like 1/2 tsp, but I love salt)

The steps –

1. Chop the pecans and separate it into two piles. Crush one pile so that they are tiny pieces.

2. Put a pan on medium heat and melt the butter.  Saute the chopped onions and pecans until the onions are deliciously caramelized.

3. If there is no butter left, add a little more. Add in the spices and pumpkin and stir. Cook the pumpkin for a couple minutes until it is more thick and fragrant.

4. Reduce the heat to low. Add in the half and half and milk and stir. Add in 1/4 tsp salt, stir, taste, and then another 1/4 tsp if you wish.

5. Once it has heated through and is nice and thick, it’s done! Rejoice!

Lauren is a college student from Texas who has got some pretty mouth-watering recipes! Here are just a few that caught our eyes:

Have a great week 🙂

Namaste = Giveaway!

30 Jul

Do you love cupcakes as much as Whit and I do? We have been addicted to the new show “DC Cupcakes” on TLC lately. Katherine and Sophie are sisters and they own a cupcake show called Georgetown Cupcakes. These ladies are unbelievably talented. I think it would be incredible to have a job where you decorate cupcakes all day. Especially with your sister! How cool is that 🙂 Everytime I watch this show it makes me want to bake… and that is exactly what we did last night!

Namaste Foods recently gave Whit and I the option to sample two products for free. So after debating over the many amazing products that this company offers, we decided on their Toffee Vanilla Frosting Mix and their Muffin Mix.

Namaste is a company dedicated to creating delicious allergen free foods.
-Their products contain no wheat, gluten, corn, soy, potato, dairy or nuts.

You get more for your money.
-All of Namaste cake mixes contain two rounds as opposed to one in traditional cake mixes.

For more info. about this company visit: https://www.namastefoods.com/shopping/storefront/cgi-bin/news.cgi?Category=About%20Us

Whit and I decided to put these two products to use by making iced toffee nut muffins. I prepared the muffins while Whit made the frosting.

Let’s first take a look at the ingredient list. I was in awe that such a simple ingredient list could whip up such awesome cupcakes! With this ingredient list, I just followed the directions on the back of the package verbatim. It said to add eggs and water so I did. I did not want to chance messing up anything.

 These nutritional stats rock!

While the muffins were in the oven I decided to snap some pictures of the frosting!

Once again such a simple ingredient list 😉

Homemade frosting is the best! And it is so fun to make…

Just look at that thickness… this is what you call REAL frosting!

Once the muffins came out of the oven then I let them cool.

Can you see the melted toffee chips?

Once the muffins were cool Whit and I had a frosting party and went to town. It is crazy but there is no way to frost ugly with this frosting. You just slather it on and it molds to the muffin perfectly!

I must say that these take the cake lol!

The frosting MADE these muffins. I saw Namaste foods the other day at Whole Foods so I definitely will be buying this frosting again for the next big event. Seriously guys if you want to impress somebody with a delicious homemade cake or cupcakes then buy this frosting mix! When I first looked at the ingredient list I was a little skeptical, but this really tastes like Toffee! YUM 😛

I do not know what it is about Fridays, but Whit and I always end up having pancakes or waffles! This mornings special was Van’s Belgian Waffles. We topped ours with plain greek yogurt, pumpkin, stevia, chocolate pb, and kashi.

 Fridays are the best 🙂

Today Whit and I went shopping with our mom all day. We went all over town looking for baby shower stuff. The shower is not until October, but there is so much to do! The party is going to be at our house. My mom always likes everything to be perfect so we have to start shopping when there are good deals, getting the house in tip-top shape, and planning. It is fun but also stressful. When we got home from shopping Ash was taking a nap. She had work all day so she was exhausted, but being the good sisters that we are we dragged her out of bed to workout. lol 🙂

For dinner we had chicken tacos. When you do not know what to make then tacos never fail in this household. We found the new Sun-Dried Tomato Laughing Cow so that is what I put in my taco. It was superb!

Now on to some more EXCITING NEWS! The lovely Sally Richards at Namaste foods not only was generous enough to allow us to review her companies products, but to hold a giveaway 🙂
